{"id":1601,"date":"2009-10-27T12:27:11","date_gmt":"2009-10-27T12:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1601"},"modified":"2009-10-27T12:28:57","modified_gmt":"2009-10-27T12:28:57","slug":"dvd-roundup-271009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/latest-news\/dvd-roundup-271009\/","title":{"rendered":"DVD Roundup 27\/10\/09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lots of interesting suff has been released in the last couple of weeks, so here&#8217;s a brief round-up:<\/p>\n<p>From MYA, the latest in their seemingly random selection of Italian obscurities are Lamberto Bava&#8217;s <strong>Dinner with the Vampire <\/strong>(<em>A cena col vampiro<\/em>), <strong>Italian Sex <\/strong>(<em>Sesso in testa<\/em>) and <strong>Mafia Connection <\/strong>(<em>E venne il giorno dei limoni neri<\/em>).\u00a0 Can anyone see any kind of defining thread in there at all?\u00a0 Well, apart from the fact that they&#8217;re all Italian.\u00a0 As with all their stuff, it&#8217;s a hit and miss selection.\u00a0 <strong>Dinner with the Vampire <\/strong>wis a  late 80s TV movie, and although it features a star performance from George Hilton, a big favourite here The Wild Eye, it&#8217;s kind of difficult to get excited about any Italian genre films from that period.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not bad, for sure, but hardly unmissable.\u00a0 <strong>Italian Sex<\/strong> is probably best known for it&#8217;s soundtrack, which was an Easy Tempo release some years back, but the film itself is rather obscure: a sex comedy starring the gorgeous Pilar Velasquez, Didi Perego and a host of Italian comedians.\u00a0 This is a welcome release just because it will be nice to see the damned thing, but is probably not to everybody&#8217;s taste.\u00a0 <strong>Mafia Connection <\/strong>is probably the most accessibly of the bunch, a decent crime film directed by Camillo Bazzoni and starring Antonio Sabato and Florinda Bolkan.<\/p>\n<p>Spaghetti Western fans, meanwhile, might be interested to hear about a new comapny in France, Snc Francia, who are putting out a bunch of really obscure items.\u00a0 Their first releases are Giulio Petroni&#8217;s excellent <strong>Night of the Serpent <\/strong>(<em>La notte dei serpenti<\/em>), <strong>A Man Called King <\/strong>(<em>Lo chiamavano King<\/em>) and Roberto Montero Bianchi&#8217;s very obscure <strong>Arriva Durango&#8230; paga o muori<\/strong>, which I don&#8217;t think has ever come out anywhere before.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what the specs are for these but, wow, these are ones that I never thought I&#8217;d see get a legitimate release.\u00a0 The downside:\u00a0 It&#8217;s Italian and French language options only, I&#8217;m afraid, and they come complete with awful, Lucky Luke style covers!<\/p>\n<p>Also for western fans&#8230; Dorado have released Paolo Bianchini&#8217;s excellent <strong>Gatling Gun <\/strong>(<em>Quel caldo maledetto giorno di fuoco<\/em>), with English language options, and Koch Media have a bunch of new releases on the way.\u00a0 But don&#8217;t forget to save some of your money for Xmas presents!<\/p>\n<p>In the mood for some contemporary Italian horror.\u00a0 Well, how about <strong>Crazy Blood<\/strong>, a film that&#8217;s so obscure it&#8217;s not even on the IMDB.\u00a0 God knows what it&#8217;s about, but it&#8217;s directed by Gaetano Russo, who acted in a bunch of Italian b-movies through the 90s, and another Wild Eye favourite, Maurice Poli.\u00a0 Italian language only, I&#8217;m afraid, but could be worth a punt.<\/p>\n<p>Hey ho, a few months back you might remember me having a rant about marketable Italian films being released without English subtitles (or audio options).\u00a0 Among the examples I mentioned were Marco Bellochio&#8217;s <strong>Vincere <\/strong>and <strong>Visions<\/strong>, an interesting sounding giallo.\u00a0 And, what do you know&#8230; they&#8217;ve both just been re-released in Italy <em>with <\/em>English options!\u00a0 Snap &#8217;em up, while you can&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Finally for now, Retro have put out the decent Paul Naschy \/ Jose Luis Merino horror film, <strong>The Hanging Woman <\/strong>(<em>L&#8217;orgia dei morti). <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vincere and Visions released with English options, a new batch from MYA, obscure spaghetti westerns let loose in France and&#8230; what the hell is Crazy Blood?
