{"id":2057,"date":"2010-05-21T11:01:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T11:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2057"},"modified":"2010-05-21T11:03:06","modified_gmt":"2010-05-21T11:03:06","slug":"fernando-piazza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/performers-directors\/black-actors-in-italy\/fernando-piazza\/","title":{"rendered":"Fernando Piazza"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2062\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2062\" title=\"ndvd_053-copy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_053-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Fernando Piazzo in Women of Devil's Island\" width=\"400\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_053-copy.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_053-copy-197x88.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fernando Piazzo in Women of Devil&#39;s Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fernando Piazza was one of the more obscure black actors to ply their trade in Cinecitta in the 60s.\u00a0 His first credited performance, as far as I can make out, was in Domenico Paolella&#8217;s entertaining historical adventure <strong>The Women of Devil&#8217;s Island <\/strong>(Le prigioniere dell&#8217;isola del diavolo, 62), where he plays the Guy Madison&#8217;s sidekick.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a surprisingly good part, for the genre: he has quite a lot of screen time, get&#8217;s to be heroic himself and ends up winning over Margaret Rose Kiel, the lucky chap.\u00a0 In 1964, he apparently turned up in the cheesey jungle movie <strong>Tarzak Against the Leopard Men<\/strong> (<em>Tarzak contro gli uomini leopardo<\/em>), but he wasn&#8217;t credited on some prints (I need to check this, I watched this not too long ago!)<\/p>\n<p>After this, though, there&#8217;s a long break in his fimlography until 1968, when he turned up Joseph Losey&#8217;s camp favourite <strong>Boom<\/strong>, again receiving quite prominent billing, and another jungle movie, Ruggero Deodato&#8217;s <strong>Gungala, the Black Panther Girl <\/strong>(Gungala la pantera nuda).\u00a0 Another lengthy break followed, until he pops up as a poker payer in <strong>Superfly T.N.T. <\/strong>(73), which was shot in Italy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2063\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2063\" title=\"ndvd_062-copy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_062-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Fernando Piazzo and Margaret Rose Kiel in Women of Devil's Island\" width=\"400\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_062-copy.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ndvd_062-copy-197x88.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fernando Piazzo and Margaret Rose Kiel in Women of Devil&#39;s Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The time-spread of his roles\u00a0 indicates that he was active and doing stuff throught most of the sixties, but quite <em>what <\/em>he was doing I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 On IMDB, he&#8217;s also listed as being a production secretary (on <strong>The Price of Power <\/strong>(<em>Il prezzo del potere, 69<\/em>)) and production manager (on <strong>The Heroes <\/strong>(<em>Gli eroi, 73<\/em>).\u00a0 But was this really the same person?\u00a0 Who knows!<\/p>\n<p>Also, there&#8217;s a prominent agent in Rome who&#8217;s also called Fernando Piazza, who seems to specialise in handling foreign performers in Rome (such as Urs Althaus, Cyrus Elias, Tomas Arana etc etc).\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if this is the same guy or someone different, but amongst his clients is Veronica Wells, who also appeared in <strong>Boom. <\/strong>A coincidence?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fernando Piazza was one of the more obscure black actors to ply their trade in Cinecitta in the 60s.
