Juan Piquer Sim\u00f3n"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bit late off the newsdesk with this one, but Spanish director Juan Piquer Sim\u00f3n died on the 7th January of lung cancer.\u00a0 After growing up with a love of American cinema in Franco&#8217;s Spain, Sim\u00f3n started working in the industry in the 1960s, often working for (or learning from) the famous international directors who were working in the time; it&#8217;s reputed, for instance, that he spent some time observing Sergio Leone while he was shooting <strong>The Good, The Bad and The Ugly<\/strong>.\u00a0 He started out by making documentaries, before being the named director of <strong>Journey to the Center of the Earth <\/strong>in 1976, which he also scripted (although some sources credit John Hough as director instead).<\/p>\n<p>He went on to make roughly a dozen films films throughout the eighties, mostly in either the horror (<strong>Slugs<\/strong>, <strong>Pieces<\/strong>, <strong>The Rift<\/strong>) or science fiction (<strong>Supersonic Man<\/strong>, <strong>Monster Island<\/strong>) genres.\u00a0 His films weren&#8217;t all that great, in all honesty, but they do have a loopy charm and were almost always entertaining.\u00a0 They also featured great casts, including the likes of Terence Stamp, Kenneth More, Christopher George and Frank Finlay, as well as an array of likeable Spanish performers such as Frank Brana and Ian Sera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bit late off the newsdesk with this one, but Spanish director Juan Piquer Sim\u00f3n died on the 7th January of lung cancer.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[6],"tags":[862],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2353"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2353"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2353\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2354,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2353\/revisions\/2354"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2353"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2353"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.thewildeye.co.uk\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2353"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
