PEPLUMS ON DVD
Caligula II - Messalina, Messalina
Pretty shoddy film from Bruno Corbucci, and it's a pretty crappy quality DVD as well. This tried to cheaply rip-off Tinto Brass's CALIGULA, and is only really recommended for Tomas Milian completists.

Constantine and The Cross
1962 film from Lionel De Felice, this stars Cornel Wilde as Constantine in a wildly fictionalised account of the emperor's life. Probably most interesting for it's supporting cast, which includes: Belinda Lee, Massimo Serrato, Franco Fantasia etc etc. Not a perfect DVD by any means, but the films isn't bad at all.

David & Goliath
Yet another shoddy release of a DVD. Ferdinando Baldi directed, Orson Wells starred. Hey-ho.

Duel Of The Champions
Another Ferdinando Baldi peplum with a 'name' star; in this case Alan Ladd. This is a pretty good film, which concentrates upon the Roman Empire rather than greased musclemen. Print could be better, but it's hardly expensive

Esther and the King
One for Joan Collins fans, but this also has major curiosity value: Mario Bava directed (at least) part of it.

Goliath and the Dragon
Mark Forrest gets to play Hercules (oops, sorry - Goliath) in this entertaining romp that features monsters, fights aplenty and Broderick Crawford. The DVD is one of the better ones, as well.

Hercules
The film that kikstarted the genre. Steve Reeves plays the musclebound hero, Sylva Koscina is gorgeous in the background. Not as high quality a DVD as the film deserves, but well worth it at the price.

Hercules in the Haunted World
Quite simply THE best peplum available on DVD, both in terms of the quality of the film and of the release. Mario Bava directs in full gothic mode, Reg Park and Christopher Lee star - reviewed here. Putting it quite simply: buy it!

Hercules Unchained
The official sequel to HERCULES, again starring Steve Reeves and Sylva Koscina.

Herod the Great
Damiano Damiani had a hand in the script for this one. Edmund Purdom stars as Herod, Victor Tourjansky directs.

Knives of the Avenger
Another top-notch Mario Bava peplum, starring Cameron Mitchell as a viking dude who wields a mean knife. This has quite a 'western' feel to it, and the DVD quality is very good indeed.

Samson
Superb peplum with Brad Harris and Alan Steel forming a muscular double act. Gianfranco Parolini directs, but German only. review

Seven Gladiators, The
Pedro Lazaga's peplum with Richard Harrison. German language only, I'm afriad.

Son of Cleopatra, The
Ferdinando Baldi's 1964 film, with Mark Damon fighting lots on nasty Romans. German language only.

Son of Samson / Son of Cleopatra
A peplum double bill that's slipped out on UK release. I haven't picked this up myself yet, so can't comment on the print quality, but it's under a tenner and the films themselves are pretty good. Worth a look, for sure.

Story of a Cloistered Nun
Domenico Paolella directed this effective nunsploitation film with Catherine Spaak and Dudley Moore. There's just about all the naughty convent goings on you'd imagine in this, and it's all presented with customary NoShame aplomb. Includes interviews with Eleanora Giorgi and more

The White Warrior
One of the best Steve Reeves peplums (although it's really more of a historical action pic, set in 19th Centuary Russia), and the disc isn't at all bad quality. It's only $10, so it's a good investment IMHO.
