Lots of giallos to choose from. My recommendation: look at the less well known stuff, there's plenty out there beyond Bava and Argento that's just as good. Unfortunately, very few early giallos seem to have creeped out as yet.
Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Wow. Blue Underground have been a bit quiet on the old euro front recently, but they're back with a bang. A glorious print, interviews with Argento, Storaro, Eva Renzi and Morricone, commentaries and much more. A must have.
Black Belly of the Tarantula, The
This is the real find amongst Blue Underground's latest batch, mainly because it's never previously had a proper release. It's a superior giallo, made with a considerable degree of care by Paolo Cavara.

The Bloodstained Shadow
This is Antonio Bido's 1978 giallo, starring Lino Capolicchio as a mathematician who comes to stay with his brother (Craig Hill) on a Venetian island. Many murders ensue. Very much influenced by Argento, this is a decent, if unspectacular genre entry. Great quality DVD.
The Bloodsucker Leads The Dance
Extremely silly, extremely cheap giallo directed by character actor Alfredo Rizzo. It's all actaully quite enjoyable, with Femi Benussi as one of several visitors to Giacomo Rossi Stuarts country castle. For some reason, people keep on being decaptiated! Nice disc, probably better than the film really deserves.

Case of the Scorpion's Tail
Another classy release of a great Sergio Martino giallo. Honestly, this is a must have complete with assorted interviews. review
Cold Eyes Of Fear
Excellent crime film / giallo from Enzo Castellari. Frank Wolff plays an ex-con with a grudge against the judge who had sentenced him to prison. Gianni Garko and Fernando Rey provide considerable support. This is a very good film, one of the directors best, and has remained seriously underrated. There are also some great mockney accents.

Sergio pastore's better than average giallo with blind pianist Anthony Steffen stumbling into a convoluted murder plot
Don't Torture a Duckling
Luico Fulci's best film by far, this is a rural giallo that includes witchcraft, child murders and Barabara Bouchet in the nude. It really needs to be presented in top-notch format, and that's certainly the case with this DVD.
Emilio Miraglia Boxset
Yowzer! This has to be the best NoShame release so far, and that's saying something... Two giallos by Emilio Miraglia - The Red Queen Kills Seven Times and The Night Evelyn Rose from the Grave - loads of interviews, features and other extras. And, err, a 'red queen' figurine. This is limited so snap it up.
Fifth Cord, The
Yowzer! Blue Underground are having a bit of a run at the moment, and this is their release of Luigi Bazzoni's above average giallo starring Franco Nero. As always, this comes complete witha bundle of extras.
5 Dolls For an August Moon
I know I'll be castigate by the purists for it, but this is actually my favourite Mario Bava film! A bunch of horrible rich people are holed up on an island, being murdered one by one. The plot may be crap, but it just looks soooooo good... Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion
Luciano Ercoli's complex and erotic giallo gets the Blue Underground treatment. A nice print, and includes an interview with writer Ernesto Gastaldi. This is a bit of a lounge classic, with a great soundtrack as well. French Sex Murders, The
Complete lunacy! A Humphrey Bogart impersonator investigates a series of murders, severed heads go missing and a mad scientist lurks in the background. Essential stuff.
Giallo Collection
If you don't already have this one, stick your head in a christmas turkey and give yourself a good basting. This features three genre classics: THE CASE OF THE BLOODY IRIS (aka WHAT ARE THOSE STRANGE DROPS OF BLOOD DOING ON THE BODY OF JENNIFER), WHO SAW HER DIE and SHORT NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS. There's also BLOODSTAINED SHADOW, which is pretty darned good as well.
The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Another Mario Bava classic, featuring John Saxon this time. His first giallo.
Labyrinth des Schreckens
Yippee, Umberto Lenzi's whacked out EYEBALL, on German DVD with an English Language track! A coach party is decimated by a killer with a penchant for removing peple's eyeballs. Fantastic.
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Lucio Fulci's excellent giallo, complete with Kit Gavin's 'Making of' documentary. Not perfect, but this is still as good as you're going to get for this.
Luciano Ercoli Boxset
Another great NoShame release, this double bill of Death Walks on High Heels and Death Strikes at Midnight is incredible fun. The films are both good and well presented, and the extras include a compilation soundtrack of Stelvio Cipriani's finest compositions
My Dear Killer
Better than average giallo, although maybe less flashy than some. George Hilton stars as the policeman investigating a nasty murder or five.
Night That Evelyn Came Out Of Her Grave, The
One of my favourites. Anthony Steffen stars as a kinky count with a prediliction for adducting and humiliating young ladies. Until people around him start dying, that is...
Pyjama Girl Caase, The
I have to say that this isn't one of my favourite giallos, but it certainly has its admirers - so maybe I'm being unfair. Dalila Di Lazzaro and Ray Milland are the stars, Falvio Mogherini the director. Lovely print, a few bits and bobs as extras (but no Di Lazzaro interview, confound it)
Seven Blood Stained Orchids
If you like your giallos Argento-style, this will be just the type of thing for you. Someone is slicing up young ladies. Antonio Sabato investigates, Umberto Lenzi directs
Seven Deaths in a Cat's Eyes
Another glorious release from Blue Underground, and the deluxe treatment really brings hidden qualities to this previously mediocre giallo. Includes interview with writer Giovanni Simonelli
She Killed in Ecstasy
Better than average Jesus Franco psychological thriller, featuring plenty of Lina Romay in the nude. The plot doesn't really matter, but there's a mystery in theirsomewhere and plenty of the usual Franco touches.
Short Night of Glass Dolls
Simply one of the best giallos ever made. Jean Sorel wakes up in a park, paralysed by some kind of drug. Everyone thinks he's dead, and he has to try and work out the identity of his 'muderer' before coming under the pathologists knife. Superb.
Slaughter Hotel
Yippee. Another sleazy classic, featuring Klaus Kinski as a doctor in a loony bin, where somebody is killing all of the patients. Note, this has been on hold for some time, but it looks like it may finally be coming out!
Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh, The
At long last, this is one of the films we've been waiting for. Sergio Martino's superb giallo, aka Next. Lovely print, cool extras, a must have. review
Strip Nude for Your Killer
Another great looking Blue Underground release but, let's be honest, the film'not that much cop. Still, if you're a giallo afficionado you'll want it! Includes interveiw with Solvi Stubing.
Twitch Of The Death Nerve
This one needs no introduction from me. Mario Bava directs, Luigi Pistilli and Claudio Camaso star. Macabre, witty, bloody and very entertaining giallo.
Watch Me When I Kill
The partner piece to Bido's BLOODSTAINED SHADOW, it's not as good a film, and this DVD isn't as fine in quality as the Anchor Bay release. Nonetheless, it's not bad, and well worth it for giallo completists...
What Have You Done to Solange?
Excellent DVD release for Massimo Dallamano's good giallo. Fabio Testi is a randy schoolteachers, whose students keep on getting bumped off.
Your Vice Is a Locked Room...
More Sergio Martino madness from NoShame. This has always been one of the most difficult of his films to see, so it's an especially welcome release. Includes interviews with Martino, Gastaldi and Fenech. |
