Come dio comanda

Come dio comanda posterGabriele Salvatores has a new film that has just been released in Italy. Come dio comanda is again based on a novel by Niccolò Ammaniti, who wrote Io no ho paura, which was of course made into a (superb) film by Salvatores a few years back. It is a dark drama, set in a bleak Northern Italian town, involving three outcasts, a father (Filippo Timi), his son (Alvaro Caleca) and their friend, a homeless man called Quattro Formaggi (Elio Germano). Driven to absolute desperation by their poverty, they decide to plan a half-witted heist… and inevitably things go wrong.

Salvatores is one of the main directors working in Italy today, so I would expect this to have a decent international release, especially as it has that vital element of “realism” so beloved of the critics. But Salvatores also has a good popular touch, and his films are always enjoyable as well as intelligent.

There is a decent cast as well: Filippo Timi was in the Giuliano Montaldo film I demoni di san pietroburgo, while Germano has been turning up in numerous interesting films recently (Romanzo criminale, Quo Vadis Baby)
