Just a couple of releases from Italy this week…
L’amore non basta is yet another in the endless stream of romantic youth movies that seem to be being produced at the moment… there’s definitely been a market for this kind of thing been identified, although not, it seems fair to say, an international one. This stars Marit Nissen as a flight attendant who falls for a passenger (Alessandro Tiberi), and follows their burgeoning but troubled relationship. God this sounds dull. So let’s move on swiftly to…
La velocita della luce. This looks much more interesting, which probably explains why it’s taken a meagre €11K, about a tenth of L’amore non basta. It’s a small scale psychodrama about a young guy who spends his time driving up and down the freeway observing other cars. He becomes obsessed with a Bentley he sees and its eccentric driver, but not everything is as it seems. This has been desribed a blackly comic noir. There’s a website here http://www.lavelocitadellaluce.it/cast.htm. The cast includes Patrick Bauchau (from Creepers and, more recently, the TV series Carnivale). Will it break out of Italy? Well, I have my doubts, but it certainly looks more watchable than most of the rubbish that does so well domestically…
