R.I.P. Victor Israel

Sad news… one of the most recognisable character actors of Spanish cinema, Victor Israel, died last weekend.  Born in Barcelona, he attended the Escuela de actores de la Ciudad Condal before making his debut in the 1962 film Tierra de todos.  Over the next 45 years he appeared in over 150 films, generally in character parts as of a less than heroic nature.  It’s hard to pick out any key roles – he was one of those actors who always made a film more enjoyable, even if only appearing for a few seconds – but some personal favourites include: The Good The Bad and the Ugly (he played the sergeant at the confederate fort), Crimson (terrible film, but Victor’s great), Companeros (as one of Jack Palance’s henchmen) and Killer’s Gold (in which he plays a mafia boss who spends his entire appearance pawing at a semi-naked Daniela Giordano).
