The WildEye book

OK, thought I might give you a Friday update on how work is going on my Italian fumetti book, provisionally entitled “FANTASTIKAL DIABOLIKAL SUPERMEN, the strange adventures of Italian comic book heroes on film“.

I was originally talking about it being a book with two different subjects, but it looks like I’ve enough content just to concentrate on the Supermen topic, which is good.

I’ve now reviewed 22 films, and have another 10 or so to go.  Films covered range from the main 60s fumetti adaptations (Diabolik, Kriminal etc etc) to slightly peripheral genre entries (Hypnos, Sigpress contro Scotland Yard) and the late seventies films spawned by the Christopher Reeve Superman film (ie Pumaman), of which there are thankfully few (because they’re all rubbish!))

I’m hoping to finish all the content by Christmas, and then have a good couple of months to work on design and proofing.  I’ve a lot of artwork, which I’m scanning in and trying to digitise at the moment (posters are a nightmare, unless you happen to have access to a decent photographic set up (or industrial sized scanner)).

After that, it’s just a case of sending it off to a printer! Anyway, I’m aiming to have it available for the end of February at the latest.

What I think we’ll end up with is an A4 magazine format book, about 70 pages in length, with a nice, glossy cover and 8 internal pages in colour (the artwork really requires this).  I’m not sure how much it will cost, but if the prices I have a half accurate it will probably be either £7.99 or £8.99.

More news as it comes…

The WildEye is a blog dedicated to the wild world of Italian cinema (and, ok, sometimes I digress into discussing films from other countries as well). Peplums, comedies, dramas, spaghetti westerns... they're all covered here.

  1. I am trying to find out about comic book heroes from the 1960’s and early 1970’s as my Italian uncle is a great fan and collector, he showed me his collection a few months back when I was in Italy, but I can’t remember any of the character’s who were his ‘heroes’ when he was a young boy/teenager.

  2. just recieved your book ,it looks fantastik.ive just flicked through it how come you left out flashman ,blue demon & the bat woman are you saving them for volume 2.

    • Hi Daz, Flashman’s in there. I intentionally didn’t cover any of the Mexican films because I’m sure there are a lot of other people out there who know a lot more about them than me. Although I was tempted by the three that we partially shot in Spain…
